Miniature Time Traveller Magazine Issue #18 18 Another favourite piece of mine is ‘Before the dance’. The motivation came from my mother’s stories of the dances she would go to, when she was a young woman in the early fifties. The Astoria Ballroom in Palmerston North was the place to be seen on a Saturday night, and every fortnight at the YMCA dances. She and her friends would try and make a new dress for each of the YMCA dances, and I remember playing with some of these wonderful tulle creations when I was a child. I imagined a young girl getting ready for one of these dances, with the new shoes and dress and matching clutch purse. The pink champagne was for Dutch courage, but Mum tells me that they would never have been able to afford that. At the dances there was only tea or cocoa and a piece of fruit cake for supper. Simpler times… I used a model from a previous workshop, and made the clutch purse to match the dress. The shoes were purchased, the champagne bottle and glass were made by Mavis Cheyne. I made the box and bag and the vase and roses on the stand to complete the picture. Vicki Morris New Dollhouse Competition Open to all readers. Identify this famous doll house. A clue? It will be somewhere in the content of the magazine. Warning. It may be an anagram. It may be a pun. This could be fun!
