Miniature Time Traveller Issue 1
Miniature Time Traveller Magazine Issue #1/18 To make a steam punk occasional table start with a fairly chunky base and a wooden or metal rod or dowel. A male acquaintance did a double take when he realized the base was an original Mecano wheel. A large washer with a large nut glued onto it is an option. Screw in a bolt the height you want and thread ’things’ on it like nuts, beads, washers etc. for visual interest. For example an old brooch base was used for the top but a piece of round wood covered in marble printed paper looks quite fantastic. A lot of old junk can be used making Steampunk items for 12th scale houses. Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes fictional works set in an era or world where steam power i s still widely used, usually the 19th century, and often Victorian, but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, often featuring futuristic technology b ased on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, artistic style etc. Steampunk was influenced by and often adopts the style of the 19th century scientific romances of Jules Vern, H G Wells, Mark Twain and Mary Shelley. ‘Heath Robinson’ machines and Salvador Dali paintings are in the genre. Clothing features a lot of leather, corsets, boots, top hats; that is just the women. Men favour Victorian style clothing with mechanically looking accessories.
