Miniature Time Traveller 29 This dress can also be made from fabric, using the same pattern. It is the first of a style of clothing made from tissues that is going to be explored more fully in future issues. The technique for putting the pieces together does diƯer from gluing or stitching up fabric and this is detailed below. First: Photocopy the pattern pieces on page 30 and lay them on your serviette. A 2 - ply one was used here. Cut out carefully with no jagged edges. 1. Glue the shoulders and back and side seams together front sides facing. When the glue is dry, turn inside out very carefully and press the seams flat gently with your finger. 2. Fit the dress onto your doll. 3. Glue the side seams of the sleeves as below: 1st put a line of glue along an edge. Then fold the opposite side over and place the edge onto the glue just inside the other edge. Put a thin line of glue along the overlap and then fold the overlap over so you have a double glued seam. This is important as it does have to be durable. The left side of the dress overlaps the right side and a spot of glue holds it into place. Find a matching braid or ribbon to make a sash. Wind this tightly around the waist and secure with glue or a stitch. After making this dress the conclusion was that it is quite easy to make clothing out of tissue. It has the advantage of gluing really well. It creases and pleats well. It will take acrylic paint. The disadvantage is that it would not be long lived unless it is hardened with Mod Podge which would make the whole lot permanent. However, in future projects we will explore and exploit all these good and bad aspects. Hints: à Keep everything clean and tidy on your workbench. à Do not have any water present. à Use a small plastic container with a fine nozzle to contain your PVA glue. This will enable better control and produce fine lines of glue. à Think about how the body of the dress is going to be put on the doll. Project: Making a winter dress from a paper serviette. Insert the arm into the sleeve and pull the sleeve gently up to the shoulder. Put a thin line of glue around the armhole on the outside and press the top of the sleeve onto it.
