Project: Making vintage sun hats 1:12th scale. This was an exploratory project. Will it be crocheted? Will it be woven? Could it be made of material and glued? Version 1. Crochet sun hat. Use No. 8 Cotton and a 2mm Crochet hook. Make a loop of 6 chain. Close with a slip st. 1st round: Work 12 single crochet into this loop. Chain 2. 2nd round: Repeat. Join at top of 2 chain. 3rd round: 3 chain. Work double crochet into each stitch. Join into 2 chain on previous round. Change to contrast colour. Work a single crochet into each stitch for two rounds. Change back to main colour. Chain 3, work a triple crochet into each previous stitch, twice. Join at top of 3 chain. Last round: 2 chain. Work two double crochet into each stitch. Finish by slip stitch into the top of the 2 chain. Version 2. Cloth sun hat You will need some card punches. 1 x 50 mm, 1 x 35mm and 1x 10mm. You will need 2mm card, some white photocopy paper, material of your choice, Tacky glue, good sharp scissors and a paint brush. Step 1. Punch the 50mm circle. Mark out the centre, draw 1 35mm circle and cut it out. Step 2. Next using this pattern, cut out two circles of your material and one circle of the white paper. Mark out the centre on both right sides of material. Step 3. Make up a weak solution of 50% tacky or PVA glue and 50% water. Using a paint brush, brush this over the wrong side of one material circle and smooth the white paper circle over it. Paint the glue over the white paper and lay the other circle of material wrong side down, onto it. Now you have a sandwich of material with a paper filling! Step 4. Let this dry totally. While this is happening, punch a 35mm circle into some coloured card that matches your material. Work out the height you want this crown to sit and mark it on this circle. In this case 1.5 cm. Cut out middle and on doƩed lines 24 Miniature Time Traveller
