My next project is a row boat for Ratty and Mole to use to go on a picnic. In twelfth scale. Some research on the internet brought up model makers making larger model boats, clever wood workers who had made fancy jigs like upturned boats to build their hulls around, and it all looked a bit hard to me.
So first I draw up a rough size and shape that will suit Ratty and Mole.

Then a few more scribbles and I had a transom (back end for land lubbers) and yet more drawings until finally I was happy with the shape and look. Then, hopeless at angles, I finally resorted to asking The technician who pointed out that my 90 degree angle was really a 10 degree angle because I was looking at the protractor the wrong way. Well, I never did full maths at college! That sorted, I found the right angle to tilt the bed of my scroll saw. I pasted my drawing on a piece of 5mm pine and cut it out. This is the boats bottom.

And here is my scroll saw and the result which is an angled cut (10 degrees) so that when I glue my planks along the side they will be on the right angle.

Next is the transom. I will keep you updated. Ratty and Mole are pretending I have finished their row boat.

I love Ratty and Mole 🙂 Looking forward to seeing your progress on their boat!
Thank you Debbie. Those two have such lovely childhood memories for me 🙂
